Two Brothers — Zhuang Folktale

1. Long ago, there was an old man who had two sons. His wife passed away, leaving him to raise them by himself. The older son was clever and crafty, while the younger was simple-minded and honest. After some time, the old man passed away too, leaving them as orphans.

2. After the father had died, the older brother said "Younger brother, come here and let's have a talk. At the time when our father was dying, he instructed us to live together. However, after lots of thought, I think it is still better for us to live separately." The younger brother replied, "Older brother, since our father has died, you are now like my father. I'll listen to your advice."

3. Now the older brother was crafty like a fox. He said, "On the day when we decide who will have the buffalo, whoever each buffalo follows shall be its owner." When the day came, he cut a handful of fresh green grass and held it in his hand, so the 3 buffalo naturally followed him. Thus, the older brother got hold of all 3 buffalo.
