W hen we first saw privately-built homes in Guangxi some 6 years ago, they mostly fell into the same pattern – a plain block-type
design with white/cream wall tiles and plain red/pink window edging. The reason for this is that land sold to private individuals is usually in rectangular plots of around 80-100 square meters, and since the buyers have to pay all the building costs themselves, the emphasis is more on functionality than aesthetics. However, in recent months, I have seen more interesting decorative features appearing on these privately-built homes, possibly because of increasing exposure to western styles and greater affluence. Here are a few seen recently in Du’an, Guangxi:
