hen we first saw
privately-built
homes in Guangxi some 6 years ago, they mostly fell into the same
pattern – a plain block-type |
design with white/cream wall
tiles and plain red/pink window edging. The reason for this is that
land sold to
private individuals is usually in rectangular plots of around 80-100
square meters, and since the buyers have to pay all the building costs
themselves, the emphasis is more on functionality than aesthetics.
However, in recent months, I have seen more interesting decorative
features appearing on these privately-built homes, possibly because of
increasing exposure to western styles and greater affluence. Here are a
few seen recently in Du’an, Guangxi:

| The basic design.

A classy balcony.

Pretty windows.

Lots of windows.

A little of everything.
