Cuiping Hill  by Chen Wei Yin

F rom my bedroom window, I can see Cuiping Hill (翠屏山) beyond the bus station (which is across the street). There are three
pavilions: one near the bottom, one half-way up, and one at the top.

My dad and I went to climb the hill one day. We walked to the foot of the hill and started climbing. After the first few steep flights of stairs, there was a monument with red Chinese words on it. All the steps were shallower and easier to climb from there to the top. We turned right and climbed to the first pavilion and saw a few tombs on the hillside. The first pavilion had two levels and a pretty good view. We didn’t stop there, but after climbing past it we decided to rest and have a drink of water.

Between the first and the second pavilion there were several pleasant places where someone could have a picnic. On the way up, we couldn’t really see how far up we were, because there were a lot of trees and bushes along the side of the path, blocking our view. When we got to the second pavilion, there were other people there too. We rested a while, and then climbed to the top.

At the top we could see almost all of Du’an town, but not my bedroom window, because we were facing the wrong way. There were a lot of buildings under construction, and most of the completed ones were only six storeys high. When we were up there, we also saw some middle-aged women who had climbed up for exercise. We estimated that there were 1200 steps to the top and it took us about 15 minutes to climb them.

On the way down, when we reached the second pavilion, my dad called my mom and sister and asked them if they could see us from my bedroom window. They looked, but we were too far away. Then we continued down and went back home.
